Pre-consumer recycled material is recovered from manufacturing waste before a product reaches its end user. Post-consumer recycled material comes from products discarded after use. Both can be used in recycled synthetic leather, but the claim should identify the material source, the component containing the recycled input, the percentage calculation and the supporting traceability documents.
Pre-Consumer and Post-Consumer Recycled Material
Pre-Consumer Recycled Material
Pre-consumer material is recovered from a manufacturing waste stream before the finished product reaches an end user.
Manufacturing scrap does not automatically qualify. Rework, regrind or scrap that can be reused directly in the same process that generated it is generally excluded from the recycled-content definition.
Post-Consumer Recycled Material
Post-consumer material comes from products that have completed their intended use and are recovered from households or commercial, industrial or institutional users.
Post-consumer does not automatically mean plastic bottles, ocean plastic or beach-collected waste. Those descriptions require more specific sourcing and traceability evidence.
Pre-Consumer vs Post-Consumer Recycled Content
| Factor | Pre-Consumer | Post-Consumer |
|---|---|---|
| Material Origin | Recovered during manufacturing before end use | Recovered after a product has reached an end user |
| Typical Sources | Eligible manufacturing waste and industrial by-products | Used products, packaging and eligible distribution returns |
| Same-Process Scrap | Routine in-process reuse is generally excluded | Not applicable |
| GRS Eligibility | Can qualify when the input meets the applicable recycled-material definition | Can qualify when the input meets the applicable recycled-material definition |
| Material Performance | Must be qualified on the finished construction | Must be qualified on the finished construction |
| Environmental Comparison | Cannot be determined from the category alone | Cannot be determined from the category alone |
Where Recycled Content Can Enter Synthetic Leather
Synthetic leather can contain several material layers. Recycled content may apply to one layer without applying to the entire finished article.
Microfiber or Fiber
A compatible fiber system may use recycled polymer feedstock such as recycled polyester.
Nonwoven Substrate
The microfiber or textile base may contain recycled fibers while other layers use different materials.
Textile Backing
Woven or knitted backing can have its own recycled-content specification.
PU System
Recycled content in a textile substrate does not automatically mean the PU impregnation contains recycled material.
Surface Layer
Coating and finishing systems should be checked separately when they are included in a recycled-content claim.
Finished Material
A finished-product percentage should account for the material components included within the stated calculation boundary.
How to Read a Recycled-Content Percentage
A percentage has limited value unless it states what is being measured. For example, recycled polyester content in one substrate should not automatically be presented as the recycled percentage of the complete synthetic leather.
| Claim | What It May Describe | Information Needed |
|---|---|---|
| 100% recycled polyester | The polyester portion of the construction | Percentage of polyester within the complete material |
| 50% recycled substrate | Recycled content within the textile or nonwoven base | Contribution of the substrate to total product mass |
| 30% recycled material | A finished-product mass calculation | Calculation boundary and supporting documentation |
| Post-consumer rPET | A PET-containing component using post-consumer recycled input | Component identity, percentage and traceability |
GRS and Recycled-Content Verification
GRS can cover eligible pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled materials. Certification does not remove the need to identify the material construction, recycled percentage and transaction associated with the order.
Material Source
Identify whether the claimed recycled input is pre-consumer, post-consumer or a documented combination.
Certified Scope
Confirm that the relevant supplier, processing site and material fall within the applicable certification scope.
Transaction Evidence
Match the appropriate transaction or traceability evidence to the material being purchased.
Product Specification
Keep the recycled-content declaration connected to the exact material article and construction.
Technical Tests
Abrasion, tear, peel, flex and hydrolysis remain separate material-performance requirements.
Bulk Approval
Approve sustainability documentation and technical performance as separate parts of the purchase specification.
Four Checks Before Ordering Recycled Synthetic Leather
Identify the pre-consumer or post-consumer waste stream.
Identify the fiber, substrate, backing or other layer containing recycled input.
Define whether the percentage applies to one component or the finished article.
Match certification, traceability and technical records to the exact material.

Pre-Consumer and Post-Consumer Recycled Content FAQs
What is pre-consumer recycled material?
Pre-consumer material is recovered from a manufacturing waste stream before the product reaches an end user. Routine scrap that can be reused directly in the same manufacturing process is generally excluded.
What is post-consumer recycled material?
Post-consumer material comes from products recovered after their intended use by households or commercial, industrial and institutional end users.
Are factory offcuts always pre-consumer recycled material?
No. Factory waste must meet the applicable recycled-material definition. Routine in-process rework or scrap reused within the same process should not automatically be counted as recycled content.
Does post-consumer recycled material always come from plastic bottles?
No. Plastic bottles are one possible source of post-consumer PET. Other eligible products recovered after end use may also qualify.
Can GRS include both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content?
Yes. Eligible pre-consumer and post-consumer inputs can be used when they meet the applicable recycled-material and chain-of-custody requirements.
Does recycled origin determine synthetic leather performance?
No. Performance depends on the complete material construction and production process. The finished article should be tested against the requirements of its intended application.
